The San Francisco 49ers quarterback room has been one of the most stable parts of their roster this offseason. While the 49ers have moved on from multiple players in anticipation of Brock Purdy’s new contract, San Francisco seems set with the addition of Mac Jones and Tanner Mordecai’s return..
With a group of three quarterbacks, it would make sense for the 49ers to forge ahead. But general manager John Lynch didn’t close the door on the addition “a cost-effective” veteran ahead of next season.
“I think we’re pretty good,” Lynch said via Cam Inman of The Mercury News. “We’ll see. You never close the door.”
Brandon Allen, Josh Dobbs Could Be Veteran QB Targets for 49ers
Inman read into comments and tried to come up with solutions if the 49ers want to add a veteran quarterback. With no signal caller over the age of 26, San Francisco has the third youngest quarterback room in the NFL behind the Chicago Bears (Caleb Williams, Tyson Bagent, Austin Reed) and Houston Texans (C.J. Stroud, Davis Mills, Keadon Slovis).
With quarterbacks coach Brian Griese replaced by 36-year-old Mick Lombardi and 36-year-old offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak, it would make some sense to add a veteran to the room. The problem is, the 49ers don’t have a lot of cap space to make that happen.
Aaron Rodgers, Kirk Cousins and Russell Wilson are well out of the 49ers price range. A contract for Joe Flacco or Ryan Tannehill could also be better used to upgrade another area of the roster. It’s also the third quarterback we’re talking about here after Jones signed a two-year, $7 million contract earlier this month, leaving a thin list of options.
Inman’s guess was to pursue a reunion with former 49ers backups Josh Dobbs or Brandon Allen. Dobbs and Allen both served behind Purdy in 2024 but both remain free agents with roughly one month until the draft. Other candidates could include Drew Lock or Case Keenum, but it almost feels like a luxury the 49ers can’t afford.
With Purdy already having Super Bowl experience, he may have enough wisdom to spread throughout the quarterback room. But it appears Lynch and the 49ers are keeping their eyes peeled in case something opens up.
