San Francisco Giants Power Rankings: Week 5

After pulling off a sweep of the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, the San Francisco Giants have now gone 8-3 in their last 11 games and currently have a 12-13 overall record. The Giants still have some injuries and other concerns to overcome, but they have certainly started to pick things up since starting the season 4-10.

The Giants rose slightly in last week’s power rankings, after going 4-1 in their games in the previous week.

This past week, the Giants went 5-2 in their games. How will this affect their place in the power rankings this week? Let’s find out.

Last week, ESPN ranked the Giants in the 22nd spot in the power rankings. In this week’s power rankings on ESPN, the Giants moved up four spots to the 18th spot in the power rankings. Here’s what Andrew Tweedy of West Coast Bias said about the Giants this week:

"The Giants finished April with one of the worst records in the National League, but appear to finally be hitting their stride. Buster Posey is leading the charge with a .393 average in his last seven games, and Hunter Pence could be back in the lineup as soon as next week. — Andrew Tweedy (@WCBGiants), West Coast Bias"

In USA Today’s power rankings this week, the Giants made a similar move up. They ranked 22nd last week, and they moved up to the 17th spot this week. The Giants have a total of 137 points in USA Today’s power rankings. Here’s what they said about the Giants this week:

"Starting to turn the tide by winning the close games."

In Fox Sports’ power rankings this week, the Giants were given the 14th spot, after ranking in the 20th spot last week. Their playoff odds this week went up to 29 percent, after having odds at 19.5 percent last week and just 15.3 percent the week before. Once again this week, Fox Sports didn’t have many positive things to say about the Giants. Here’s what they said about the Giants this week:

"If you add up the ERAs of Chris Heston, Madison Bumgarner, and Tim Hudson, it equals 10.02. Ryan Vogelsong’s ERA is 9.31."

After failing to rank in the top-20 of MLB.com’s power rankings for the past two weeks, the Giants finally worked their way back into the top-20 this week. As a reminder, MLB.com calculates a team’s overall power ranking using this equation: Power Rankings = Experts’ Rankings (75 percent) + Fan Rankings (25 percent).

In this week’s power rankings on MLB.com, the Giants received 39 points from the experts (which ranked 18th among the experts’ rankings of the other teams) and 13 points from the fans (which also ranked 18th among the fans’ rankings of the other teams). This gave the Giants 52 overall points, which ranked them as the 18th team in this week’s power rankings.

This week, the Giants continue their 10-game homestand with a three-game series against the San Diego Padres and a four-game series against the Miami Marlins. Will the Giants continue to rise in the power rankings next week? We’ll keep you updated.
