San Francisco Giants Power Rankings: Week 4

facebooktwitterreddit

After a dismal week in the power rankings last week, the San Francisco Giants bounced back and went 4-1 in their games last week, including a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants still have a long way to go to make up for their 8-11 record, which is in last place in the National League West, but last week was a good start.

The Giants fell significantly in the power rankings last week, as they had only won one game in the week prior. They ranked in the 21-26 range last week, after ranking in the 12-15 range the week before. How will their 4-1 record last week affect their place in the power rankings this week? Let’s find out.

Despite the Giants’ impressive record last week, they didn’t rise in ESPN’s power rankings this week as much as expected. After ranking 26th last week, ESPN moved the Giants up to the 22nd spot this week. Here’s what Connor Grossman of West Coast Bias said about the Giants this week:

"The Giants have rebounded and won four of five games, riding the hot bat of Justin Maxwell. The 31-year-old non-roster invitee is hitting .308 while subbing for the injured Hunter Pence. — Connor Grossman (@connorgrossman), West Coast Bias"

In USA Today’s power rankings this week, the Giants experienced a similar change in ranking as they did in ESPN’s power rankings this week. The Giants were ranked in the 25th spot last week, but they moved up to the 22nd spot this week.

The Giants now have 95 points in USA Today’s power rankings. Their highest ranking for USA Today has been number six, and their lowest ranking came last week at 25. Here’s what they said about the Giants this week:

"Another sweep of the Dodgers would be helpful."

The Giants saw a slight increase this week in Fox Sports’ power rankings as well. Last week, Fox Sports ranked the Giants in the 21st spot, their season-low ranking, but this week, they moved the Giants up to the 20th spot. This obviously isn’t a huge improvement, but it’s improvement nonetheless.

Fox Sports assessed the Giants’ playoff odds at 19.5 percent, which was up from the Giants’ 15.3 percent playoff odds last week. Although the Giants moved up one spot in Fox Sports’ power rankings, they still didn’t have anything positive to say about the reigning champs. Here’s what they said about the Giants:

"Many predicted that Casey McGehee wouldn’t be able to duplicate the success of his 2014 season, but he’s proving them wrong, once again leading the league in GIDPs."

In MLB.com’s power rankings this week, the Giants, once again, fell out of the experts’, fans’, and overall power rankings of the top-20 teams in MLB. They fell down to the 24th spot, after owning the 13th spot a couple weeks ago.

The Giants begin a three-game series on the road against the Dodgers tonight, and they then come back home on Friday to start a three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels and a 10-game homestand.

The Giants experienced a slight increase in the power rankings this week, so we’ll see if they can keep building on that by finishing this week with another solid record. We’ll keep you updated on where the Giants rank in next week’s MLB power rankings right here at Golden Gate Sports.
