San Francisco Giants Power Rankings: Week 3
The San Francisco Giants have gotten off to a disappointing, injury-riddled start to the 2015 season. Not much has gone right for the reigning World Series champions so far this season, but the Giants still have plenty of time to improve where needed.
The Giants are currently 4-10, which is the worst record in the National League West and the third worst record in the National League and all of MLB. The Giants only recorded one win last week.
In this series of articles, we will update you on where the Giants fall in the MLB power rankings each week. We will look at the power rankings from ESPN, USA Today, Fox Sports, and MLB.com.

In last week’s power rankings, the Giants ranked in various places across the major power rankings, but they were ranked within the 12-15 range. How has the Giants’ poor play in the past week or two affected their spot in this week’s power rankings? Let’s find out.
In ESPN’s MLB power rankings, the Giants were ranked in the 15th spot last week. This week, the Giants plummeted 11 spots down to the number 26 spot in the power rankings. Even if it is only week three of the regular season, that is still quite a fall. Here’s what Connor Grossman of West Coast Bias said about the Giants’ fall in the power rankings this week:
"Receiving their World Series rings has been the only bright spot for the defending champions in losing nine of their last 10 games. Jake Peavy is the fifth Giants player to go on the disabled list, and the team is going to utilize an off day on Monday to use four starters this week. — Connor Grossman (@connorgrossman), West Coast Bias"
The Giants also took a hard fall in USA Today’s MLB power rankings this week. Last week, USA Today ranked the Giants as the 13th best team in MLB so far this season, but this week, the Giants fell down to the 25th spot, which is just one spot higher than where they were ranked in ESPN’s power rankings. The Giants also received the award this week for the biggest fall in USA Today’s power rankings.
The Giants have just 70 points in USA Today’s power rankings so far. Their highest ranking for USA Today has been number six, and their lowest ranking is their current ranking at 25. That is quite a large gap. Here’s what they said about the Giants this week:
"Defending champs finally get a win at home to end eight-game losing streak."
In Fox Sports’ MLB power rankings this week, the Giants landed in the 21st spot, which is not quite as bad as their fall in ESPN’s and USA Today’s power rankings. However, they won the award for Fox Sports this week too for the biggest fall in their power rankings, as they were ranked 12th last week. Their highest ranking so far this season was last week at 12, and their lowest ranking was this week at 21.
Fox Sports assessed the Giants’ playoff odds as 15.3 percent, which is down from 32.3 percent last week. Here’s what Fox Sports said about the Giants’ ranking this week:
"When the Giants are working right, they’re a lot like Hunter Pence – it might not look pretty, but damn if it isn’t effective. When they’re off, they’re a lot like a bad baseball team."
In MLB.com’s power rankings this week, the Giants just fell out of the experts’, fans’, and overall power rankings of the top-20 teams in MLB, after they received an overall power ranking last week of 13th in MLB.
The Giants clearly took a deep plunge in the power rankings this week. However, there is still a significant amount of games left on the regular season schedule, so the Giants still have plenty of time to prove that they’re a playoff contender, bounce back in power rankings, and make a strong push towards a division title or a playoff spot.
Will the Giants bounce back this week and move up in the power rankings next week? We’ll keep you updated.
