The San Francisco 49ers have experienced a ton of turnover this offseason. After missing the playoffs in 2024, the 49ers have shown no hesitancy to shake things up as they look to get back to contention.

With the attention on the future, a report has emerged regarding the 49ers and Mac Jones. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that San Francisco made a trade offer for Jones last year before New England shipped him to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

49ers Rumors: San Francisco Attempted to Trade for Mac Jones

In 2024, the Jags shipped a sixth-round to New England in exchange for Jones. One year later, the 49ers were able to land Jones.

On Wednesday, San Francisco inked Jones to a two-year, $7 million deal that had $5 million guaranteed. The contract has a max value of $11.5 million and positions him to serve as the backup quarterback for Brock Purdy.

San Francisco's interest in Jones goes back to 2021. During the 2021 draft process, these two were closely linked. The 49ers traded three first-round picks in order to move up to No. 3 overall. They were reportedly enamored with Jones but decided to go with Trey Lance instead.

"There were two that I really wanted. Mac Jones and Trey. Those were the two guys that we were locked in on from the beginning," Shanahan said on the "I Am Athlete" podcast in 2022.

Lance had more potential and athletic ability, so they rolled with him. That didn't pan out, and now Jones is in the fold.

In 52 career games (49 starts), the Alabama product recorded 1035-of-1570 (65.9%) for 10,590 passing yards, 54 passing touchdowns, and 44 interceptions. He went 20-29 as a starter, including 2-5 with Jacksonville last season.

While he won't be the starter, the 49ers have long had an interest in Jones and found a way to bring him to town four years later.
