After losing several guys in free agency, the San Francisco 49ers did a great job trying to fill those voids in the 2025 NFL Draft. They used their first draft picks on the defensive side of the ball and six in total. The 49ers also drafted five guys on the offensive side of the ball.

While the 49er faithful is excited to see this year’s draft class in action, San Francisco has an undrafted free agent who could make a push over the next few months to make the 53-man roster.

Former BYU cornerback Jakob Robinson was one of the five UDFAs who signed with the 49ers following the draft. Robinson received interest from other clubs but decided to stick with San Francisco, which was the best move given their cornerback depth chart.

The 49ers saw veterans Charvarius Ward, Isaac Yiadom, Nick McCloud, and Rock Ya-Sin sign with different teams in free agency. San Francisco didn’t do much to replace those players in free agency, signing former Seattle Seahawks corner Tre Brown to a one-year deal, who struggled last year in pass coverage.

The 49ers still have Deommodore Lenoir, Renardo Green, Brown, and potentially rookie Upton Stout as starters. However, the depth behind Lenoir and Green leaves much to be desired, which could open the door for the former BYU defender.

According to Grant Cohn of San Francisco 49ers on SI, Robinson lined up at left cornerback during 7-on-7 drills at 49ers’ rookie minicamp. Cohn also mentioned that Robinson is similarly athletic to Lenoir, which should catch the attention of 49ers fans.

Last season at BYU, the 5-foot-10, 181-pound cornerback had 43 combined tackles, five pass deflections, five tackles for loss, three interceptions, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Over his four-year career with the Cougars, he had 182 combined tackles, 21 pass deflections, 11 interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), eight tackles for a loss, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Robinson began his collegiate career at Utah State in 2020, where he played in four games.

As evident by his stats, the rookie cornerback is a willing tackler despite his size and has the versatility to play on the outside or inside the slot, which could help him win a job on the 53-man roster. That said, we’ll see if Robinson will run with the opportunity he has in front of him.
