The San Francisco 49ers finished a disappointing season with a 6-11 record. But while most teams would try to get another bite at the apple, San Francisco opted to tear everything down to the studs.
Deebo Samuel’s trade to the Washington Commanders was the beginning, as the 49ers lost a total of 17 players from last year’s roster either by trade or free agency. A lot of this was done to account for George Kittle’s new contract and a potential extension for Brock Purdy, but it’s left San Francisco thin in several key areas.
Cornerback is one specific area where the 49ers could use some help, and a big name on the market could help them rebound from a tough year and accelerate a rebuild in 2025.
49ers Should Consider Signing CB Asante Samuel Jr.
The 49ers cornerback room is a mess as they begin their overhaul. Charvarius Ward left for the Indianapolis Colts during free agency, while San Francisco also lost Isaac Yiadom to the New Orleans Saints, Rock Ya-Sin to the Detroit Lions, and Nick McCloud to the Chicago Bears. While San Francisco added Tre Brown and expects 2024 second-round pick Renardo Green to occupy the other starting spot, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to call Asante Samuel Jr.
Samuel has been a starter since he was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the second round of the 2021 draft, but has been dealing with a shoulder injury. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo stated earlier this month that Samuel is still dealing with the symptoms of that injury, but it could help the 49ers find a bargain when they’ve been obsessed with cap management.
Samuel posted a Pro Football Focus grade over 70 in 2022 and 2023, and his coverage grades were even better, with a 76.1 in 2022 and a 75.6 in 2023. While he allowed 11 touchdowns over those two seasons, he would be an upgrade over what the 49ers currently have, and at worst a depth piece.
This is important when looking at the depth chart. Deommodore Lenoir is locked into the slot position and Green was the 49ers' highest-graded corner per PFF last season. Brown has some upside as a sneaky free agent signing, but he’s also been plagued by injuries, which emphasizes the need for depth.
It’s surprising that the 49ers didn’t add another cornerback in the draft but maybe they were waiting to see their options before making a move. While Samuel comes with some risk, he could solve a pressing need and help the 49ers contend in the NFC West next season.
