The San Francisco 49ers had an offseason that was filled with change and departures. With organized team activities (OTAs) set to begin at the end of the month, the 49ers made sure to lock down quarterback Brock Purdy before the action began.

On Friday, it was revealed that the 49ers and Purdy agreed to terms on a five-year, $265 million extension, which saw $181 million in total guarantees. He's set to make an average of $53 million per year, which puts him behind QBs like Dak Prescott, Jordan Love, Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and Tua Tagovailoa. It's a good deal for both sides, and the 49ers' next move couldn't be more obvious.

During a recent episode of the "Scoop City" podcast, The Athletic's Dianna Russini expects LB Fred Warner to land an extension.

"I have a hard time believing that [the 49ers] are not going to make Fred Warner the highest-paid linebacker in football," Russini said.

And that is an easy decision for San Francisco.

49ers Should Extend LB Fred Warner After Brock Purdy Contract News

Back in 2021, Warner signed a five-year, $95 million extension with the 49ers. After getting $12 million or less for the first three years of the deal, his cap hit is set to explode to $29 million in 2025 and $26 million in 2026.

Baltimore Ravens LB Roquan Smith is the highest-paid LB in the NFL at an annual average value of $20 million; however, there's a good chance Warner's next deal will surpass that number.

The former BYU product is a true difference maker all over the field, standing out as a run stuffer and pass defender. In seven seasons, Warner has compiled 897 total tackles, 36 TFLs, 30 QB hits, 10 sacks, 53 pass breakups, 15 forced fumbles, and 10 interceptions.

Warner has also logged four Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors. He has earned the right to become the highest-paid LB in the league, and after finally paying Purdy, locking down Warner for the foreseeable future is a smart and easy move.
