The San Francisco 49ers have been one of the teams who have seen a ton of movement along their roster. Over the last couple of weeks, countless players have decided to sign elsewhere.

In the same breath, former 49er players have inked deals around the league for the 2025 season and beyond. Free agency opened up in March but players are still landing new deals. On Friday, it was announced that the Washington Commanders are signing QB Josh Johnson.

NFL News: QB Josh Johnson Signs With the Commanders

Johnson is the ultimate journeyman, playing for 14 different teams in the NFL. He had four different stints with the 49ers (2012, 2014, 2020, & 2022).

Although he only played in two games for the 49ers (zero starts), Johnson is a great veteran voice to have in the QB room. The 49ers QB room consists of Brock Purdy, Mac Jones, and Tanner Mordecai. None of these guys is over 26 years old and Johnson, 38, could have given that group some wisdom.

The 49ers clearly feel comfortable with the group they have intact but it doesn't come without some risk. Jones was the backup in Jacksonville last season, where he ended up logging a 2-5 record. He went 171-of-262 (65.3%) for 1,672 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Relying on him to be QB2 is a high risk but the 49ers have liked him since the 2021 NFL Draft. They even tried to trade for him last season before inking him to a deal in free agency.

While Johnson hasn't had the most successful NFL career, he's still signing deals for a reason. Teams and coaches like what he brings to the team and that kind of experience is extremely valuable.

It's clear that wasn't something that intrigued the 49ers much but he still landed with one of the up-and-coming teams in the Commanders, reuniting with former 49er Deebo Samuel.
