Coming off a 6-11 season, the San Francisco 49ers’ offseason has been more about people going out than the players coming in. Deebo Samuel, Javon Hargrave and Charvarius Ward are just some of the players who have been shipped out of the bay in the opening week of the league year while others such as Aaron Banks and Jordan Mason have also found new homes with big pay days.

Put it together and there will be plenty of new faces on the 49ers in 2025. But San Francisco lost another player on Thursday afternoon and he happened to land with a NFC rival.

Former 49ers CB Rock Ya-Sin Signs With Lions in Free Agency

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, former 49ers cornerback Rock Ya-Sin has agreed to terms with the Detroit Lions. Ya-Sin appeared in 13 games for San Francisco last season playing 106 snaps on special teams and earning a 57.9 grade from Pro Football Focus. The 28-year-old also logged 63 defensive snaps allowing one three-yard touchdown and two pass breakups on three targets.

Ya-Sin was a second-round pick with the Indianapolis Colts in the 2019 NFL Draft and started 13 games in his rookie season. But he never realized his potential in three seasons with the Colts and was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022. The Temple product has bounced around since, spending the 2023 season with the Ravens and becoming mainly a special teams player last season.

The 49ers lost Ward in free agency but added Tre Brown as a free agent signing from the Seattle Seahawks. While second-round pick Renardo Green is projected to take over as the second cornerback, Deommodore Lenoir is set to return in the slot. Although Ya-Sin could have competed for a reserve role, there really wasn’t much room in the secondary and he’ll look to battle for a similar role in Detroit.
