The San Francisco 49ers likely aren’t going to make a serious attempt to trade for Jamal Adams.

The San Francisco 49ers already boast arguably the most talented roster from top to bottom in the entire NFL. From their superstars on defense to their more than capable offense, there are few teams in the league that could match up with them.

Of course, this talent has forced the team into quite the cap bind that really started this offseason with the trading of star defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. And their cap situation will only grow more challenging in the next year with numerous key players on expiring contracts.

However, despite their overwhelming talent and tricky cap management, that hasn’t stopped them from being connected to one of the biggest names in the NFL.

With rumors swirling regarding superstar safety Jamal Adams‘ future with the New York Jets, numerous teams have shown interest. The 49ers are one team that has been tied to him through various rumors.

Now, there’s no doubt that the team would benefit from adding a player of Adams’ caliber. What team wouldn’t?

The 24-year-old has made the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons and was named first-team All-Pro in 2019. Adams was recently named the NFL’s top safety by Pro Football Focus and his outstanding run defense, pass-rush, and coverage grades solidify that notion.

Adams is the complete package and would take an already dominant 49ers defense to the next level. But as exciting as a trade for Adams would be, it doesn’t seem possible in the slightest.

A 49ers trade for Jamal Adams is simply unrealistic.

The 49ers are already in a tight cap situation and have an extensive list of players on expiring contracts after this season.

Players like Richard Sherman, Trent Williams, K’Waun Williams, Kyle Juszczyk, Jaquiski Tartt, D.J. Jones, Kendrick Bourne, and Tevin Coleman are just some of the names who could be playing their final year in San Francisco.

Oh, and there’s one prominent name that was left off that list — tight end George Kittle. Kittle would love to get an extension done before the start of the season, but as of now, the two sides don’t appear close.

Rest assured, however, the 49ers will extend Kittle sooner or later.

There’s also linebacker Fred Warner who the 49ers want to extend in the near future as well. The list of names is seemingly endless and it’ll be challenging for the 49ers to keep even half of these players.

Let alone add a player like Adams who is set to become the NFL’s highest-paid safety whenever he gets his well-deserved extension.

The 49ers can’t afford Adams and it also doesn’t look as if the Jets are in any hurry to trade him either. They still want to get an extension done, but it doesn’t appear that’s going to happen before the start of the season.

Nonetheless, they’re not actively shopping him.

The 49ers surprised a lot of people when they made the aggressive move to trade for Trent Williams during this year’s draft. But this is an entirely different situation.

San Francisco doesn’t have the resources, cap space, or desire to get this done. And for that reason, the idea of a possible trade for Jamal Adams remains nothing more than a pipedream.
