San Francisco 49ers’ tight end Jordan Reed could miss up to two months and will be placed on injured reserve.

The San Francisco 49ers are the most injured team that currently exists in an injury-prone NFL at the moment. And on Sunday, they got even more injured, particularly regarding tight end Jordan Reed.

Reed was already filling in for the injured George Kittle who hurt his knee back in Week 1. The veteran former Washington tight end had been filling in admirably for his teammate, but soon joined him on the sidelines following an injury in Week 3.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters on Monday to provide an injury update about Reed and a host of other 49ers players. Unfortunately, the prognosis for Reed doesn’t appear promising.

Shanahan said that the oft-injured 30-year-old had suffered an MCL sprain and would be placed on injured reserve. An initial timeframe for his return was placed at around 6-8 weeks meaning that he could miss the next couple of months.

For Reed, a player who has dealt with his fair share of injuries in his career, this is obviously a major blow. Reed had been playing well in place of Kittle including a seven-catch performance in Week 2 where he hauled in his first two touchdowns of the season.

Now, he’ll be forced to watch from the sideline for a number of weeks.

The 49ers hope that George Kittls’ return could alleviate the loss of Jordan Reed.

The hope is that Kittle will be able to return for this week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles after missing the last two with a knee injury of his own.

Either way, Reed being out means that we should see more of Ross Dwelley who did a nice job in relief of Reed on Sunday. Dwelley is a favorite of the 49ers’ coaching staff and hauled in four catches for 49 yards in the team’s 36-9 victory over the New York Giants.

The 49ers also have sixth-round rookie Charlie Woerner who could see an uptick in snaps, especially if Kittle isn’t good to go for Sunday.

Shanahan announced that linebacker Mark Nzeocha would be placed on injured reserve as well with a quad injury. He also added that Dee Ford, who is dealing with knee and neck issues, could also be placed on IR later in the week.

The hits keep coming for the 49ers and Reed’s injury is just the latest blow.
