49ers Super Bowl Prediction: Latest odds and why the underdogs will win it all
By Allen Settle
The San Francisco 49ers have opened as slight underdogs to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV, but that doesn’t mean they don’t stand a good chance at winning it all.
With Super Bowl LIV rapidly approaching, football fans in the Bay Area are hoping the Lombardi Trophy will reside in San Francisco for the first time since the 49ers’ blowout win over the San Diego Chargers in 1995.
The Odds
While the game is expected to be a fairly even match up, the Kansas City Chiefs have opened as the slight favorites.
While oddsmakers favor reigning league MVP Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs, the 49ers are certainly expected to be serious contenders. Here’s why the Niners will defy the odds and be crowned Super Bowl Champions on February 2nd.
The Prediction
My official Super Bowl prediction is a 49ers’ victory with a final score of 28-20. Why do I have San Francisco overcoming the odds and coming out on top? It all starts with the team’s biggest strengths — the run game and defense.
Make no mistake about it, the Chiefs will be no easy opponent. Mahomes is legitimately one of the best arm talents the NFL has ever seen. They also have multiple receivers that are known for their elite speed and ability to stretch the field.
As demonstrated in their 24-point postseason comeback against the Houston Texans, the Chiefs are capable of blowing a game wide-open in a very small amount of time. They will assuredly be a difficult challenge.

- 49ers: George Kittle and Deebo Samuel cleared to return to practice
- 49ers expected to place DE Dee Ford on injured reserve

- 49ers: Jordan Reed could miss up to two months, will be placed on IR
The Matchup
However, the 49ers seem well equipped to handle a dangerous offense. Kyle Shanahan’s zone run scheme will put the team in a position to keep the reigning MVP on the bench for as long as possible.
Breakout star Raheem Mostert’s 220 rushing yards in the NFC Championship game is the perfect example of how this may be possible.
While a single player breaking the 200 rushing yards mark is highly unlikely, an effective run game will allow the Niners to control the clock and limit Mahomes time on the field.
Injured running back Tevin Coleman is also showing encouraging signs of progress. If he is able to suit up, San Francisco will have the benefit of a runner who is fresh and dangerous.

The Precedent
The 49ers’ defense will also be a major factor in the outcome of the game. Do you remember how the New York Giants were able to conquer the New England Patriots’ historic offense in two Super Bowls?
The answer is simple — pressuring the quarterback with their front four. As unstoppable as Tom Brady seemed, pass rushers like Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul, and Osi Umenyiora were able to slow him down.
This is where players like Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, DeForest Buckner, and Arik Armstead will make a major impact.
The four former first-round picks have wreaked havoc for most of the season. Additionally, all four players are in good health for the first time in months.
Football fans in the Bay Area are hopeful that their team’s defensive line will be the latest to slow down an MVP quarterback in a championship matchup.
The Conclusion
Despite the current betting lines, the 49ers are in a prime position to match the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots for the most Super Bowl titles with six.
The team’s ability to control the game on the ground while allowing their pass rushers to disrupt the offense should put them in a prime position. San Francisco also has the benefit of one of the best postseason cornerbacks in recent history in Richard Sherman.
Say it with me ladies and gentlemen: “The San Francisco 49ers will overcome the odds and become Super Bowl Champions!”
