Sacramento Kings should give Bogdan Bogdanovic a chance at point guard
By Justin Fried
The Sacramento Kings should give the versatile Bogdan Bogdanovic a chance to play point guard in light of the recent injury to De’Aaron Fox.
The Sacramento Kings have been the recipients of some poor injury luck to start the 2019-20 season as combined with the losses of both Marvin Bagley and now De’Aaron Fox, the Kings are just 3-6 at the time of writing.
Not the ideal start to the season that many fans starved for success had hoped for.
Fortunately, Bagley isn’t expected to miss too much longer as he could be back in as early as a week-and-a-half to two weeks. But the Kings have certainly missed his front-court presence while he recovers from a broken thumb.
However, no injury could compare to the one just suffered by point guard De’Aaron Fox.
Fox suffered a Grade 3 ankle sprain in practice on Monday as first reported by James Ham of NBC Sports. This isn’t some minor ankle injury that could leave him sidelined for a few weeks either.
There is a very good chance that Fox misses the remainder of 2019 and he could even remain on the shelf into 2020 as well. And for a Kings team that was seemingly just starting to gel early in the season, this is truly heartbreaking.
Not only is Fox the team’s best player on the court, but he is the face of this young franchise. Few can match Fox’s energy and on-court leadership and there is no player on the roster who could come close to adequately replacing him in the starting lineup.
But with the 21-year-old out long-term, the Kings will need to devise a strategy to compete in his absence. The most obvious replacement remains veteran Cory Joseph.
Joseph was signed to a hefty three-year, $37 million contract in the offseason which some saw as a bit of an overpay. But general manager Vlade Divac had been eyeing Joseph for quite some time and he finally got his guy.
The 2011 first-round pick has made a living in the NBA as a stout defender and smart ball-handler. However, his shortcomings on the offensive side of the ball make him a less-than-stellar replacement.

And if you’re looking for scoring, look no further than fan-favorite Yogi Ferrell as a potential option. Ferrell is an exciting shooter who is in many ways the opposite of Joseph. However, he’s undersized and his lack of defense and playmaking abilities make him a poor fit as a starter.
Ferrell just wouldn’t work in a backcourt alongside Buddy Hield.
But perhaps the most intriguing option on the team is third-year pro Bogdan Bogdanovic. Bogdanovic is primarily a shooting guard but he has plenty of experience playing small forward and has even handled the point guard position in the past.
While typically a wing player, Bogdanovic is a very capable ball-handler and offers more playmaking upside than either Joseph or Ferrell. And if the Kings are looking to replicate Fox’s skillset, Bogdanovic may just be the best fit.
He’s not as great of a defender as Joseph nor is he as energetic as Ferrell, but Bogdanovic gives the Kings the best of both worlds as a capable defender and solid shooter.

Joseph and Ferrell would still be used, but they’d be more relegated to the second unit whereas Bogdanovic would make more sense as a starter. Joseph just doesn’t offer enough on offense to be a starter and Ferrell remains a shooting guard trapped in a point guard’s body.
Joseph will likely be given the initial chance to start, but it may not take very long before head coach Luke Walton realizes that he is a significant downgrade from Fox on offense.
Bogdanovic gives the Kings their best possible replacement for Fox and allows Joseph and Ferrell to hopefully flourish with the second unit.
He may not be the most obvious replacement, but Bogdanovic is the best pure fit.
