San Francisco 49ers: Will the team make any more trades before the deadline?
By Justin Fried
The San Francisco 49ers have already made one trade deadline acquisition, but could they be looking to make another move before Tuesday’s deadline?
The San Francisco 49ers are riding a wave of momentum following their 51-13 thrashing of the Carolina Panthers. There are few teams — perhaps only one — that look as dominant as the 49ers do right now begging the question, why change a winning formula?
With the trade deadline approaching this Tuesday at 1 p.m. PT, teams across the NFL are looking to get any last-minute deals done in order to improve their situation. For the league’s bottom-feeders, this means selling players while you still have them and accumulating future draft capital.
But for teams like the 49ers, this means trading away those precious draft picks to acquire players who could help win now. And San Francisco has already employed that strategy.
The 49ers traded for veteran wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders just under a week ago when they sent a third and a fourth-round pick to Denver in exchange for Sanders and a fifth-round pick.
And on his very first drive with the team this past week, he scored a touchdown.
The 49ers were in need of desperate help at the receiver position with a relatively thin unit and Sanders provides that veteran, experienced presence that they were looking for.
But now that the move has been made, what else could the team do?
On defense, the 49ers appear to be pretty set. Robert Saleh’s unit has been perhaps the best in football this season and that’s including the vaunted Patriots defense. The 49ers defense is special and it’s difficult to pinpoint any additions being made there.
Perhaps we would have said secondary help at the start of the season but Emmanuel Moseley has done a great job filling in with injuries to Ahkello Witherspoon and Jason Verrett while the trio of Jaquiski Tartt, Jimmie Ward, and Tarvarius Moore gives the team excellent depth at safety.
And lord knows they don’t need pass-rush help.
That brings us back to the offense where perhaps the 49ers could still make an addition. Despite trading for Sanders, it wouldn’t be shocking to see general manager John Lynch make a move for another receiver ahead of the deadline.

It likely wouldn’t be a huge name like A.J. Green, but perhaps another lower-profile player on the market like Nelson Agholor or Robby Anderson could pique his interest.
While the 49ers already have downfield speed at receiver, it’s never a bad thing to have an additional field-stretcher on offense and both Agholor and Anderson could satisfy that role.
If not, it wouldn’t hurt to acquire some extra depth on the offensive line and Philadelphia Eagles swing tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai has been the subject of many trade rumors. With both Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey banged up, it would be wise to acquire some additional depth.
Sixth-round rookie Justin Skule has played surprisingly well but the 49ers could likely use an upgrade over Sam Young and Vaitai could be just the player to target.

But perhaps the most notable trade rumor that the 49ers have been subject to over the last few days has involved backup quarterback C.J. Beathard. Or rather, backup-backup quarterback C.J. Beathard.
Beathard has reportedly drawn interest from a few teams around the league with rumors that a sixth-round pick could be the offered trade package. The former Iowa standout has starting experience which is likely why teams looking for extra insurance are calling.
And from the 49ers perspective, this seems like a no-brainer. Beathard is stuck behind Nick Mullens as the third-string quarterback and it remains highly unlikely he sees the field barring extreme, awful circumstances.
If they could push to acquire a fifth-rounder, they shouldn’t hesitate to say yes. And even if the price is a sixth, it still seems worth it.
The 49ers still have a little over a day, at the time of writing, to make any last moves. The question remains, will they stand pat with what they have or make any last-minute additions or subtractions?
