It’s time to see what the San Francisco 49ers are made of this week against their big brothers in the Los Angeles Rams. It’s a battle of hot-shot coaches and protege quarterbacks.

The San Francisco 49ers travel 380 miles south (fact-check me on that — I am but a mere New Jerseyan) to take on the defending NFC champs in the Los Angeles Rams, and it’s set to be a doozy.

We have the undefeated Niners trying out their hand against the team they look up to (at least for now) in the Rams, who’ve lost two straight games and are hungry for a win.

The Rams have carved the path the 49ers hope to also go down in the near future. They have the offensive guru coach in Sean McVay with the young apprentice quarterback in Jared Goff who continues to get better every year.

They have an NFC championship under their belt, one of the best offensive schemes in football with a loaded receiving core (second in points scored and yards gained last year), and the best defensive player in the league in Aaron Donald on the other side of the ball.

The Niners are built in a similar fashion in that they have Kyle Shanahan at the helm, who was successful in coaching up Matt Ryan to an MVP award. They have the young quarterback with a high ceiling in Jimmy Garoppolo.

And now, as we’re seeing unfold, they have a rising defensive line led by DeForest Buckner and Nick Bosa that’s on its way to possibly being the best pass rush in football.

Young head coaches, high-ceiling quarterbacks, and fresh outlooks in schemes — these two teams have nothing but bright futures in front of them.

So, who wins Sunday?

I have the Rams who have just lost their last two games.

They got blasted at home by Jameis Winston and the Bucs in an absolute offensive showcase (which probably wouldn’t happen again if they played nine more times). Then, Jared Goff put them in a position to win at Seattle only to lose with a missed field goal.

From what we’ve seen, Goff has played his tail off these past two weeks and his defense and kicker have let him down; it’s a testament to how good and underrated Goff is.

The 49ers have a very good defense with a tough secondary to pick apart, but I think, at least this week, a quarterback like Goff will be able to find the holes and put up his usual numbers — especially being that he’s at home where he has a lot more success.

On the Niners side, there isn’t much to pick apart in terms of their on-field play because they’ve been solid everywhere, especially in the running game. But here’s my problem with them this week — they smashed the Browns last game but it came at a price.

They lost Kyle Juszczyk and Mike McGlinchey in the process. Juszczyk is the driving force behind the run game and McGlinchey is one of the best young right tackles in football.

I think the run game isn’t going to be as potent as it was these first four weeks and they’ll have to wind up throwing the ball a lot more. And with now two starting tackles out of the lineup, that Rams defensive line is going to have a big leg up in creating pressure.

Next. The San Francisco 49ers must stay away from a trade for A.J. Green. dark

I’m picking against the Niners for the first time this year. I have the Rams taking it 28-21. Their passing attack will find its success and the Niners’ offense will have problems getting its feet off the ground and have to resort to playing “catch-up.”
