San Francisco 49ers defeat Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2: Let’s talk about it
By Sean Basile
It was an ugly Week 1 for the San Francisco 49ers but a bounce-back Week 2. There was plenty to love about what we saw from the team on Sunday.
It was a big day by the San Francisco 49ers as they notched up their second road victory of the year defeating the Cincinnati Bengals by a final score of 41-17. The 49ers are now 2-0 to start the 2019 season.
They haven’t been 2-0 in their first two road games of the season since 2011-12 when they took their first two road games at Cincinnati and Philadelphia. They then went on to be 13-3 that year, only to lose to the New York Giants in the NFC Championship Game.
San Francisco also hasn’t started off a season 2-0 with those first two games being on the road since the 1988-89 season when they won the Super Bowl with this guy named Joe Montana captaining the ship.
Maybe you’ve heard of him.
Between that year and this year, there are also four seasons mixed in where the 49ers won their first two road games of the season and racked up records of 14-2, 14-2, 14-2, and 12-4.
So, it’s safe to say when this team wins its first two road games, success follows. There’s a lot to be optimistic about, in my opinion, if you’re a Niners fan.
Let’s talk about this game because I had the Niners taking it, but I thought it would be much more of a battle; I had them winning 31-28 with a good test from a Bengals team that took the Seattle Seahawks to the buzzer in Week 1.
Turns out the Niners absolutely ran away with this game.
Literally, in a sense, because Matt Breida finished with 121 rushing yards on just 12 carries. Raheem Mostert had 83 yards pounding on 13 attempts (with a receiving TD mixed in there). And even Jeff Wilson Jr. got himself 2 scores on 10 carries.
Also, out of thin air, Jimmy Garoppolo had himself a bounceback performance from last week by throwing for 297 yards and three touchdowns.
He was able to bring his QB rating up a few ticks from 64.8 in Week 1 to 69.3 this week. He also saw his passer rating skyrocket from 80.2 in Week 1 to 131.2 this week.

Let’s also give some credit to Deebo Samuel and the big day the rookie had. The South Carolina product finished with five catches on seven targets for 87 yards and a touchdown.
The young lad broke on to the scene this game and is in line to be the No. 1 wide receiver on this team moving forward with Marquise Goodwin being more of a deep threat and Dante Pettis seeing his snaps decrease dramatically.
On the defensive side, the secondary didn’t shut down Tyler Boyd like I thought they would as Boyd totaled 122 yards on 10 catches, but no harm there because they kept him out of the end zone and the game wound up a blowout.
The defensive line was very impressive once again. The improved four-man unit up front recorded three sacks last week and four this week. And everybody seems to be getting in on the action.

Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, and Arik Armstead racked up sacks in Week 1. Armstead, DeForest Buckner, Ronald Blair, and Solomon Thomas recorded sacks this week.
This is a very strong defense all-around if you haven’t noticed yet. From the defensive line that’s deep, to the linebacking core with Fred Warner and Kwon Alexander, to a stout secondary with Richard Sherman leading the way.
Nice win this week. My biggest concern with this team now is the offensive line, which played better this week, but now has to move forward without Joe Staley for around 6-8 weeks as the six-time Pro Bowler suffered a broken leg in this game.
Other than that, it’s now back home to San Francisco to take on an 0-2, Ben Roethlisberger-less Pittsburgh Steelers team.
More to come on that game.
