It’s been a long, winding road for Reuben Foster since he first entered the NFL in 2017. The former San Francisco 49ers first-round pick and starting linebacker has battled seemingly countless off-field issues that ultimately culminated in his release on Nov. 25.

Although we don’t yet have footage of the incident that dropped the hammer on his time in the Bay Area, video recently became available of a previous run-in with the law. This occurred on Oct. 12, when Santa Clara cops were called to a high-end apartment complex after neighbors reported a loud argument.

Here’s the video:

And here’s more context, courtesy of the Mercury News’ Jason Green:

"Ennis was crying when officers arrived and said she was “not okay,” but neither she nor Foster appeared to be hurt, according to a police report. Pictures of both were taken to document the lack of injuries.Officers handcuffed Foster and placed him in the back of a patrol vehicle while they talked to Ennis.Ennis told officers the quarrel started after she took Foster’s cellphone and found “things … that upset her,” according to the police report. She did not elaborate and Foster declined to provide a statement. No one was cited or arrested in connection with the incident."

As Green also points out, this incident preceded the arrest that led to Foster’s eventual release on Nov. 25. Ennis was allegedly invited by Foster to join him at a hotel prior to the 49ers’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The linebacker is then said to have assaulted her after she threatened to tell his new girlfriend of their meeting.

Ennis also claimed more abuse by Foster back on Feb. 11, but the case was dropped after she testified that the allegations were fraudulent.

Since his release by the 49ers, Foster has been claimed by the Washington Redskins. For now, though, he cannot practice or play for the Redskins since he’s on the commissioner’s exempt list, which bars him from both activities.

It’s a disappointing turn of events for Foster, who can’t seem to get out of his own way. A promising NFL talent with the potential to be one of the league’s best inside linebackers, he simply can’t keep himself out of trouble. Between the domestic violence issues and possession of assault weapon charges, Foster continues to place roadblocks in front of his own career.

For the longest time, the 49ers did their best to support Foster despite his character issues. At some point, though, you have to abandon trying to help someone who doesn’t want to help himself.

For Foster’s sake, let’s hope that a change of scenery can help him get his life together. Otherwise, we may soon see his young NFL career come to an abrupt end.
