The San Francisco 49ers are set to square off with division rival Arizona – this is your place to discuss the game and all things 49ers football.

For the San Francisco 49ers, the only thing more fitting than The Walking Dead returning to television tonight, would be a MASH reboot hitting the airwaves instead.

To say that the 49ers are banged up would be like saying – water is wet. Fire is hot. And bears do actually relieve themselves in sylvan environments. In other words – duh.

Suffice it to say, this San Francisco team is beat up. Badly. And the 2018 campaign, once filled with so much potential and promise, is now kind of ambling and shuffling around like one of the zombies on The Walking Dead.

Having lost running back – and high priced free agent acquisition – Jerick McKinnon to a season-ender before the season even began, the 49ers got a little more insult added to injury (both metaphorically and literally) when franchise signal caller Jimmy Garoppolo went down with a season-ender of his own.

Now, the 1-3 49ers – being led by quarterback C.J. Beathard – limp into their game this week with division rival Arizona, and look to somehow rally and bounce back against an 0-4 Cardinals squad that’s looked every bit as bad as their record.

But, they’re going to have a lot of question marks before they hit the field, and the answers to those questions could determine whether or not they can claw their way to 2-3, or whether they fall deeper into the abyss.

Giving credit where credit is due, Beathard looked better in his first action last week than he did in his first season in HC Kyle Shanahan’s system, and it was almost enough. Almost. The LA Chargers outlasted the 49ers, hanging on to win 29-27 last week.

But Beathard was respectable in the loss, throwing for 298 yards on 23-37 passing. He tossed a pair of touchdowns, and unfortunately, a pair of picks to go with it. One pick that turned into three points, and the second to essentially end the game.

It was a good showing by a 49ers squad still reeling from a rash of injuries that have left them decimated in some key spots. And this week doesn’t look much more promising on that front.

Perhaps fortunately, the only player ruled out of the game for San Francisco is receiver Dante Pettis. However, the list of players who received the dreaded “questionable” tag and may or may not actually play, is a lengthy one.

Starting tackles Joe Staley (knee) and Mike McGlinchey (knee), running back Matt Breida (shoulder), center Weston Richburg (knee) cornerback Richard Sherman (calf), receiver Marquise Goodwin (hamstring, quad), and cornerback Jimmie Ward (hamstring), all have the questionable designation.

Some of them look on track to play. It’s expected that Staley, McGlinchey, Breida, and Richburg, will on be on the field – but, it’s not guaranteed. Goodwin is likely out. And the rest, we’ll just have to wait and see.

It’s a guessing game at this point, as to who’s in and who’s out. But, it seems like some very key players will not be at 100 percent against Arizona, and perhaps, run the risk of aggravating those injuries by playing.

The 49ers v. Cardinals matchup is a game of two teams faced with a myriad of issues. Two teams, who very likely, aren’t headed anywhere this season. And for the 49ers, it’s a shame, simply because of all the potential and promise the season started with.
