The San Francisco 49ers got their first win of the season in week two over the visiting Detroit Lions – let’s take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly from that game.

It took these San Francisco 49ers just two weeks, what it took last season’s version 10 full weeks to accomplish – notch their first win of the season.

It was a performance that went from solid to shaky, but was overall pretty good. There were some highs, some lows, and everything else in between. There were some solid performances, but it’s clear that the 49ers are a team with a lot left to work on.

This is a young team that hasn’t quite yet lived up to its potential. There are several players who were taken in early rounds of recent drafts that haven’t yet lived up to that billing. That lack of development is slowing down the progress of the team, and making it difficult to win games.

It’s clear that HC Kyle Shanahan has a solid plan. He’s a meticulous game planner, and always goes in with a solid idea how to attack the opposing team. He’s great at diagnosing weaknesses, and exploiting flaws in their defensive system with his high powered, attacking offense.

Most of the current problems the 49ers are having emanate from the defensive side of the ball, which only serves to highlight the lack of development and productivity from some recent picks – as well as a general lack of consistent talent overall.

That’s not to say they don’t have talent on that side of the ball. Reuben Foster – when he returns from suspension – is a gamer. Richard Sherman can still lock it down. Fred Warner is looking like a solid pick up.

And yet, there are quite a few players who have underachieved, not developed, and are disappointing – to say the least. Which could present a problem going forward, if this team hopes to contend this season.

The 49ers have the offensive firepower to hang with anybody in the league. But, you cannot win without defense, and even a team as offensively lacking as the Lions were able to push them up and down the field all day long.

But, it is early. Perhaps, these players will develop and flourish in San Francisco yet. For now, a win is a win, is a win – and winning games is all that matters in the NFL.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly from San Francisco’s week two win over the Detroit Lions…
