San Francisco 49ers: Three keys to Sunday’s matchup with the Detroit Lions
By Frank Yien
2. Red Zone Efficiency
The 49ers’ red zone offense underperformed during the preseason, and the results weren’t any better against the Vikings.
Last week, three red zone trips resulted in just six points – an Alfred Morris fumble and two field goals. (The other field goal and touchdown were scored from outside the red zone.) The Morris fumble was especially disappointing, as it killed an otherwise impressive 14-play drive.
One of the red zone field goals came after Garoppolo’s errant high throw to an open George Kittle in the back of the end zone. These costly mistakes are the difference between a win and a loss.

Coach Kyle Shanahan employs more of a speedy, stretch-the-field type offense, so the Niners aren’t especially suited to grinding out a few yards on the ground as they near the goal line.
Especially against an elite defense like the Minnesota Vikings, running between the tackles is difficult at best. The Detroit Lions should pose less of an obstacle on Sunday.
Perhaps fullback Kyle Juszczyk will see some touches, either as a running back or receiver.
Juszczyk was targeted twice and had one reception for 56 yards against Minnesota.
Regardless of how they do it, the 49ers must demonstrate the ability to finish off drives as they approach the end zone.
Field goals will doom them to watching the playoffs on TV.
