San Francisco 49ers Players to Watch During Game Against Indianapolis Colts
Right Guard
Arguably the biggest positional battle going into the preseason has yet to be settled. Last week when Jonathan Cooper made his debut made things a lot more interesting.
More from San Francisco 49ers
- 49ers sign new long snapper amidst a flurry of roster moves
- 49ers: George Kittle and Deebo Samuel cleared to return to practice
- 49ers expected to place DE Dee Ford on injured reserve
- 49ers sign TE Daniel Helm off the Buccaneers practice squad
- 49ers: Jordan Reed could miss up to two months, will be placed on IR
Cooper, at just 28-years old, was signed this offseason to be the starting right guard. Unfortunately, injuries have derailed him from taking over the starting job and this has become a position of concern for Shanahan.
Cooper undoubtedly had an up and down return last week against the Texans, but it’s looking like this is Cooper’s job to lose.
In order to solidify his starting spot in the offensive line, he will have to beat out Joshua Garnett and even Mike Person.
Figuring out the right guard position would stabilize the offensive line and provide consistent protection for the offense. The line is stabilized by Joe Staley, Mike McGlinchey, and Weston Richburg, perhaps now Cooper could be added to that list and the 49ers can move forward with making progress to their offense.
It’s going to be an entertaining Saturday facing off against Andrew Luck and the Colts. The offense has looked really good up until this point and it’s a matter of perfecting the scheme before heading off to Minnesota.
