Los Angeles Lakers for Brandon Ingram + Ivica Zubac or First pick 2019.

The Los Angeles Lakers, next summer, will try to land one — or maybe two — marquee players. The rumors mostly center on Paul George or LeBron James.

But, why not Thompson, who was born and raised in LA and whose father is a former player?

The main asset involved in facilitating a deal could be Brandon Ingram, a potential franchise player who still has to show his skills after the front-office declared him to be part of the future roster.

  • To complete the hypothetical trade, the Lakers might involve young center Ivica Zubac, who with the arrival of Andrew Bogut and Brook Lopez, could struggle to find minutes — and could ultimately be put on the market.

But, if for example Bogut should still have his chronic injuries, the Warriors could ask for the first pick in the 2019 Draft. And with the anticipated arrival of some big-name players, it’s a pick the Lakers could be willing to deal.

You can’t just ignore the cons of this trade though. And the reality is that a deal could make some Lakers fans angry. In fact, the Lakers have just chosen to give the keys to the team to Ingram and they can’t change idea in just twelve months. Or at least, they shouldn’t.

And, also if, Thompson is a top-tier player, there is no assurance that another superstar decides to join the Lakers. This could be catastrophic for them, because the Lakers would have only Thompson as a bona-fide superstar — who only has another year on his current contract at that.

Not only that, but the Lakers would be giving up a potential franchise-player to a division rival. Also, the Warriors should have to really consider this trade because, although the development of Ingram alongside Kevin Durant would be something potentially amazing, they would have a problem at the shooting guard spot, with only the young Patrick McCaw to cover that role.
