The Celtics are involved in every single trade rumor these days, it seems. But a trade for Klay Thompson could allow them to complete the last step to become a legitimate contender. This trade honestly would have some pros and cons.

On the one hand, the Celtics would add a superstar to a team already good thanks to Kyrie Irving, Al Horford and Gordon Hayward. The talent would allow to this team to rule the Eastern Conference years and Danny Ainge would have built a superteam.

On the hand though, the Warriors would receive two good players who, while maybe not on the same level as Thompson, would be functional in their system. In fact, a defender as tough as Marcus Smart coupled with the potential improvement of young Patrick McCaw,  would be a perfect fit to Stephen Curry defensive shortcomings.

The other player to complete the trade would be one of the two young players the Celtics drafted this year. The idea of adding a top-three prospect, with Kevin Durant and Draymond Green serving as mentors could create something potentially devastating.

And given that the Warriors have already Jordan Bell and Patrick McCaw on their roster, Golden State could potentially create a young core that would be good for years to come.

The cons are linked to the shooting guard position and the future of Marcus Smart. In fact, if the Warriors decide to trade Thompson because the salary cap, they have to consider that Smart will be free agent next summer and the extension could be very expensive.

At this point, the Golden State Warriors would have to weight the risk of trading Thompson and risking losing Smart the next year, leaving them with  just a young prospect and McCaw at shooting guard.
