San Francisco 49ers vs. Dallas Cowboys Game Day Open Thread
By Kevin Saito
The San Francisco 49ers are hosting the Dallas Cowboys in a game featuring teams headed in opposite directions – come discuss everything 49ers here.
Once upon a time, a game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys would have drawn national interest. Once upon a team, both teams were powerhouses and perennial Super Bowl threats. It’s more than obvious though, that those days are long over and these teams are very far removed from their glory days.
The Cowboys seem to be a team on the rise. With an exciting quarterback/running back combination in Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot. They’ve displayed an explosive offense, a defense that has been adequate, and have run out to a 2-1 start.
The 49ers on the other hand, don’t seem to be doing much of anything. Let alone rising. Chip Kelly was supposed to bring some fire and innovation to the San Francisco offense. And their scoring offense is in the middle of the NFL pack – an improvement over last season.
More from San Francisco 49ers
- 49ers sign new long snapper amidst a flurry of roster moves
- 49ers: George Kittle and Deebo Samuel cleared to return to practice
- 49ers expected to place DE Dee Ford on injured reserve
- 49ers sign TE Daniel Helm off the Buccaneers practice squad
- 49ers: Jordan Reed could miss up to two months, will be placed on IR
Their defense though, has given up 83 points in those three games and is near the bottom of the league in scoring defense. In fact, they’re near the bottom of most relevant defensive statistical categories. But then, Chip Kelly teams aren’t exactly known for their defensive prowess.
The offense is where the problem is. And much of that boils down to the man under center. Blaine Gabbert – while not the dumpster fire that Colin Kaepernick was when he got benched – is clearly not the answer.
For the year, Gabbert is completing 55 percent of his passes. He has three touchdown tosses and three interceptions. And under his guidance, the 49ers currently have the league’s thirtieth ranked passing attack.
Which obviously, isn’t going to get it done.
But they have a chance to get right against a defense that isn’t exactly lighting it up. If Gabbert can get right, he might find some opportunities against a passing defense that ranks twenty-third in the league.
And against a run defense just outside the league’s top ten, they may need to lean on Gabbert if Carlos Hyde can’t find room to roam.
