A Way Too Early Prediction of the 49ers’ 53-Man Roster
By David Ochoa
Halfway through the off season, there isn’t much to write about other than baseless predictions. So I thought I’d jump on that bandwagon and predict the San Francisco 49ers‘ 53-man roster.
More from San Francisco 49ers
- 49ers sign new long snapper amidst a flurry of roster moves
- 49ers: George Kittle and Deebo Samuel cleared to return to practice
- 49ers expected to place DE Dee Ford on injured reserve
- 49ers sign TE Daniel Helm off the Buccaneers practice squad
- 49ers: Jordan Reed could miss up to two months, will be placed on IR
QBs: Colin Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert
In the past the 49ers have kept three QBs on the roster, but the 49ers need all the roster spots they can spare to keep all their talent on the team.
RBs: Carlos Hyde, Kendall Hunter, Reggie Bush, Mike Davis, Trey Miillard
Hyde is the starter, and everyone else will have defined roles in the offense. Millard replaces Bruce Miller at FB mainly because Miller currently isn’t with the team and is dealing with legal problems.
WRs: Anquan Boldin, Torrey Smith, Jerome Simpson, Quinton Patton, Bruce Ellington
The two receivers that beat the 49ers in the Super Bowl a couple years ago will now be starting for them in 2015. Draft picks like DeAndre Smelter will most likely spend the year on IR.
TEs: Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald, Derek Carrier, Blake Bell
Hopefully the 49ers will get better play out of their TEs than they did last year. Bell beats out Garrett Celek for the final spot on the roster.
OL: Joe Staley, Daniel Kilgore, Alex Boone, Anthony Davis, Brandon Thomas, Marcus Martin, Joe Looney, Dillon Farrell, Trent Brown
Most of the starting line up will stay the same, but with Mike Iupati gone, the LG spot is up for the taking.

DL: Darnell Dockett, Ian Williams, Glenn Dorsey, Arik Armstead, Tank Carradine, Quinton Dial, Tony Jerod-Eddie
While the 49ers did lose players from last year like Ray McDonald and Justin Smith, they are finally healthy and have new pieces to replace them with.
LBs: NaVorro Bowman, Michael Wilhoite, Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Aaron Lynch, Eli Harold, Corey Lemonier, Philip Wheeler
The 49ers suffered heavy loss at the ILB position with Patrick Willis and Chris Borland, but despite this, the 49ers are still loaded with talent at LB.
CBs: Tramaine Brock, Dontae Johnson, Chris Cook, Kenneth Acker, Keith Reaser, Shareece Wright
Other than Tramaine Brock’s spot, every spot in the CB rotation is up for grabs. It will be interesting to watch this position battle in camp.
S: Eric Reid, Antoine Bethea, Jaquiski Tartt, Craig Dahl
No real surprise here. The 49ers like Dahl for his exceptional special teams play, and he earns a roster spot because of that.
Specialists: Phil Dawson, Andy Lee, Kyle Nelson
The 49ers drafted Bradley Pinion to push Lee, but I don’t think it will be enough to take his job.
