Here’s what NFL.com’s Jeremiah had to say about Armstead:

"“The 49ers need to add some linebacker depth in the draft, but Armstead is too gifted to pass up in this scenario.”"

And here’s what NFL.com’s Zeirlein had to say:

"“We all know the 49ers desperately need inside linebacker help, but this isn’t the spot for that pick. Armstead is the future replacement for Justin Smith.”"

Both analysts acknowledge that the 49ers need some middle linebackers, but Armstead is just too good to pass up. With the uncertainty surrounding Justin Smith‘s future, this could become even more true.

Smith is considering retirement, but no one seems to be completely sure if “The Cowboy” will be back or not. If he doesn’t return, Armstead could jump onto the field quite a bit. If Smith decides to come back, Armstead will take more of a rotational role, but will also be learning from one of the best in the game in Smith.

Armstead is a physical specimen, standing at 6’7″, weighing in around 290 pounds. Armstead has also played as a defensive end and tackle. He’s got great skills, but is still raw, and will take a little time to develop into a true difference maker in the NFL. But with his skillset, he could turn into a great project player. Learning from someone like Smith would definitely speed that process up.
