Don’t Forget About Vernon Davis

One of the core players of the recent elite 49er teams has been their 2006 first round draft pick, tight end Vernon Davis. After a rocky start to his career, Davis found his mentor in Harbaugh and was toughened up by Mike Singletary . That unique combination of coaches has led Davis to becoming one of a kind at his position.

He was a tight end with receiver’s speed and was the only threat in the Alex Smith run offense in 2011. After learning to adjust to Kaepernick’s fastball delivery, Davis has developed great chemistry with his quarterback. That relationship has enabled him to put up better numbers than must wide receivers in the league.

Davis was also beloved by fans for his positive attitude and late game heroics such as the Catch III against the Saints in 2012, as well as his excellent play in the 49ers latest knockout of the Green Bay Packers in January 2014.

Last season, however, was a dreadful one for Davis as he battled injuries and couldn’t find his rhythm or consistency all year. He struggled with dropped passes late in the year, which left his stock at an all time low.

Thankfully, Jed York and Trent Baalke still believe in his potential and he enters this season as the second longest tenured 49er to punter Andy Lee.

Davis is as prideful as any player in the locker room and will do everything in his power to erase last season from the minds of the 49er faithful. In addition, Davis is still respected around the league, shown in the fact that he was a target of the Denver Broncos recently after they lost Julius Thomas.

Davis playing alongside Peyton Manning is a scary thing for opposing defenses to think about. Reportedly though, the asking price from San Francisco was exceptionally high and the Broncos balked at the deal.

The least the 49ers can do is give Vernon a second chance, because one forgettable season does not take away the countless unforgettable memories he’s created.
