Find Mike Iupati’s Replacement In the Draft

The key to any successful offense is a strong offensive line who can protect their quarterback. The 49ers were booed in 2007 for using their first round draft pick on offensive tackle Joe Staley, instead of a quarterback or wide receiver. Now Staley is one of the leaders of this football team.

Mike Iupati and Anthony Davis were taken in 2010 as San Francisco used both first round picks to strengthen the offensive line. It is never sexy to draft a lineman, but it is a necessity to have quality blockers to prevent sacks and injuries to the quarterback or running backs. Even Frank Gore credited a lot of his success to having great offensive linemen, often saying it was Staley who gave him open space to run.

Enter Brandon Scherff, a four year starter with the Iowa Hawkeyes, Scherff is widely regarded as the best lineman in the country. Weighing in at 319 pounds and continuously hitting the weights, he will be able to take on the toughest defenders in the league. NFL.com has put together a pretty thorough draft profile on Scherff that’s worth the read.

With a front office that has proven that it is willing to make bold moves without worrying too much about what the fans think of them, drafting Scherff would benefit their offense right away as he has been seasoned by four years in college. If he is not available at at pick 15, then San Francisco could shift their attention to other lineman such as Flordia State’s Cameron Erving, or Alabama’s Arie Kouandjio.

Last season, the Dallas Cowboys were criticized for drafting guard Zack Martin over Johnny Manziel. To everyone’s surprise,  Jerry Jones chose to take the more proven player who filled a genuine need on his football team. Martin complimented Tony Romo perfectly and Dallas won the NFC East easily.

With Bush and Kaepernick preparing to take their fair share of designed option runs, it would be wise to have a line that can prevent them from getting blindslided.  A wide receiver such as Devante Parker or Dorial Green-Beckham would be great additions but they are not a necessity because the Niners have a solid target that has a chip on his shoulder…
