Mike Shanahan, the legendary Broncos’ Super Bowl-winning coach and former 49er offensive coordinator, has been out of football for the last year. When last we heard of him, he was surrounded by controversy in Washington regarding his handling of prized quarterback Robert Griffin III.

In his four seasons in Washington, Shanahan’s team finished in last place in the NFC East three seasons out of four. However, his pedigree with the 49ers and Broncos has led the Niners’ brass to contact him regarding their head coaching vacancy.

Shanahan’s experience is his most appealing trait as a head coach. However, due to his advanced age and his lack of success in recent years, he doesn’t seem like a viable long-term option for the 49ers.
