The 49ers fans received the surprise news on Monday night that the team was moving on from Kyle Juszczyk after eight years of service. The nine-time Pro Bowler fullback was the longest-tenured 49ers player of the John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan era. Juszczyk was one of their first signings in 2017 and quickly became an integral part of the elite offenses as a playmaker, rusher, and, most notably, as a blocker.

Juszczyk obviously had a very specific role on the offense as a fullback. He was the league's highest-paid and most utilized FB. After his contract restructure in the 2024 offseason, Juszczyk was set to make $4.1 million in 2025. With his release, San Francisco will save $2.9 million against the cap this season.

49ers Signed TE Luke Farrell to Replace Kyle Juszczyk Before Releasing Him

The 49ers will likely not sign another fullback after Juszczyk's departure. Before releasing him, San Francisco had already signed blocking tight end Luke Farrell to a three-year, $20.25 million deal. The former Jaguar will likely take on a similar role to Juszczyk in the outside zone run scheme.

With this deal, Farrell became the most lucrative free agent tight end signing of the Lynch era. The contract makes him the second-highest paid tight end in team history. The 49ers hope that they finally found a solid backup to George Kittle who can also play together with the star tight end. Eric Saubert had that role last season, and not only did he leave plenty to be desired, but he also hit unrestricted free agency this offseason.

Juszczyk will turn 34 before next season. Amidst rumors of a potential retirement, the veteran fullback said that he still had a lot of gas left in the tank. He was still an excellent run and pass blocker last season, playing a crucial role on offense. A longtime fan favorite in San Francisco will be missed, but every 49ers fan will be rooting for his success on his next team.
