Last month, the San Francisco 49ers brought in free-agent wide receiver Gabe Davis for a visit after the Jacksonville Jaguars released him. Even though Davis was coming off a down year in Jacksonville, the veteran wideout could be a nice veteran option in the 49ers’ passing game.
However, Davis left San Francisco without a deal and is now visiting with another team. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday that Davis is scheduled to visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday. The Steelers are another wide receiver-needy team, making them a good potential landing spot for Davis.
The veteran wide receiver also reportedly visited with the New York Giants, but left without a deal. The 26-year-old Davis is coming off a rough 2024 season with the Jaguars.
Davis signed a three-year, $39 million contract in free agency last year, as he was expected to be one of the top options in their passing game. However, that did not come to fruition, as Davis had 20 receptions (42 targets) for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games.
The veteran pass catcher had his 2024 season cut short due to a torn meniscus in his left knee. Davis averaged a career-worst 12 yards per reception and had a 61.5 passer rating on passes when targeted.
Therefore, it will be interesting to see if Davis comes to terms on a contract with the Steelers, especially since he was released with a failed physical designation.
As for the 49ers, they haven’t made any changes to their wide receiver room since the 2025 NFL Draft. They’ll hope that Ricky Pearsall, Jauan Jennings, Demarcus Robinson, and Brandon Aiyuk (when healthy) can lead the way sans Deebo Samuel.
The 49ers also have a few young wide receivers to keep an eye on, such as Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins (rookie), and Isaiah Neyor (UDFA).
