The San Francisco 49ers had a very eventful early part of the 2025 offseason. The 49ers moved on from key pieces like Deebo Samuel, Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanga and Charvarius Ward. Then, in the draft they added four members to their front seven on defense: DE Mykel Williams, DT Alfred Collins, LB Nick Martin and DT CJ West.
Following the draft, San Francisco attempted to add offensive line depth by signing veteran D.J. Humphries. While it was reported on April 29th that Humphries and the 49ers agreed to terms on a contract, it was revealed on May 15th that no deal was finalized. Though no reason was given for the deal falling through, poor medicals may have played a role.
That said, the 31-year-old offensive tackle found a new home. According to AMDG Sports X account, Humphries signed with a division rival in the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday.

D.J. Humphries Signs with the Rams After Negotiations With 49ers Fell Through
During the back half of the 2024 season, Humphries signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. The former Pro-Bowl tackle was coming off a torn ACL, but Kansas City was hoped he could be a quick solution to their left tackle problem.
However, the outcome was the complete opposite, with Humphries struggling massively. In two games, he allowed three sacks, three QB hits, five QB hurries and 11 QB pressures, according to PFF. Despite the fact that it seems Humphries is no longer suitable to start. He could still provide value as a backup.
This is why San Francisco tried to bring him in. Yet, something clearly fell through during the negotiation process, or he would have joined the team in May.
Nonetheless, if Humphries continues to struggle and sees playing time in 2025, 49ers fans will be happy they dodged a bullet by not signing him.
