The San Francisco 49ers had a busy offseason after missing the playoffs in 2024. They have watched as multiple players headed elsewhere in free agency, leaving holes at different positions on the roster.
One of those spots is at cornerback after Charvarius Ward signed a three-year, $54 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts. There's a massive void at CB1 now, and the 49ers may have the best chance to improve that position with an All-Pro player.
According to Ian Rapoport, the Miami Dolphins and the CB Jalen Ramsey have mutually agreed to explore trade possibilities and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him play elsewhere in 2025.
The #Dolphins and seven-time Pro Bowl CB Jalen Ramsey are mutually set to explore trade options and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he played elsewhere in 2025, per me and @TomPelissero.

NFL News: Jalen Ramsey Seeking Trade From Dolphins
The 49ers have $38.5 million available, and that's more than enough to absorb Ramsey's remaining deal. Last September, the Dolphins and Ramsey agreed to terms on a three-year, $72.3 million extension. At that point, it made him the highest-paid CB in the league but has since been surpassed.
Regardless, Ramsey is still one of the elite cornerbacks in the league. He's a seven-time Pro Bowler and a three-time First-Team All-Pro. In his nine-year career, Ramsey has supplied 534 total tackles, 108 pass deflections, 24 interceptions, and six forced fumbles.
The 49ers still believe their championship window is open, so a move like this would help elevate this roster. Cornerback is a glaring hole for this team and there may not be a better option than Ramsey available.
He's slated to have a $16.6 million cap hit in 2025, $25 million in 2026, $26.8 million in 2027 and $36.1 million in 2028. While the number goes up each season, there's a potential out after the 2026 season.
The 49ers can afford to take on the deal, and it would transform this defense. Michigan Will Johnson has been a popular mock draft pick for San Francisco due to their dire need. If they find a way to acquire Ramsey, they could go elsewhere and draft the best player available in the first round.
