There will be a slew of moves happening around the league in a couple of days. The official roster cutdown day is on Tuesday at 1 p.m. PST, and teams will need to have their rosters down to 53 men.

The 49ers didn't waste time getting rid of some guys and parted ways with two quarterbacks. According to The Athletic's Vic Tafur, San Francisco released both QBs Carter Bradley and Tanner Mordecai.

49ers Part Ways With Two QBs on Monday

The 49ers have Brock Purdy, Mac Jones, and Kurtis Rourke as the three QBs on the roster. They drafted Rourke in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft, but he has been rehabbing a torn ACL. San Francisco placed him on the non-football injury list at the beginning of camp, giving him time to focus on getting healthy.

In the meantime, the 49ers added Bradley on July 31. They also signed Mordecai as an undrafted free agent back in April. With roster spots limited, the 49ers had to part ways with both QBs, but released them with injury designations. That means they will head to injured reserve if they go unclaimed on waivers.

During the preseason, Bradley went 22-of-41 (53.7%) for 199 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception. As for Mordecai, he was 13-of-19 (68.4%) for 124 passing yards, one passing score, and an interception this summer.

Regardless, both guys were kept around but have a chance to rehab on injured reserve. The biggest winner here has to be Rourke. It appears he'll be rehabbing, knowing that the QB3 spot is likely his for the 2025 season. 49ers fans know that Purdy is the franchise QB, and Jones was brought in to be his backup.

In the 2025 preseason, Jones was 17-of-23 (73.9%) with 209 passing yards and two interceptions. The 49ers gave him a two-year, $8 million deal for a reason, and he will be around. He also has 49 starts in his career and could step in if San Francisco needed.

There will be more moves on the way in throughout the next 24 hours, and this was just one of the first transactions in the Bay.
