With mandatory minicamp wrapping up for most teams this week, it has allowed coaches and players to work together one last time before the training camp next month.

These reps are a good opportunity for players to increase their chances of making the 53-man roster or prepare for the upcoming season.

At the same time, some teams use minicamp to bring in various veterans for workouts to see if they are worth signing now or during training camp. One former San Francisco 49ers running back is searching for his next opportunity and received a surprise workout invite.

On Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC-2 reported that the Houston Texans recently worked out veteran running back JaMycal Hasty.

The 28-year-old running back spent parts of the last two years with the New England Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars before that. Last season with the Patriots, Hasty had 128 yards from scrimmage and a receiving touchdown on 30 touches in 15 games.

The 5-foot-8 running back began his NFL career with the 49ers. San Francisco signed Hasty as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft.

Hasty appeared in eight games as a rookie in 2020, tallying 148 yards and a touchdown on the ground on 39 attempts. The former Baylor running back was also featured in the passing game with seven receptions (eight targets) for 33 yards.

Then, in his next and final season with the 49ers, the veteran running back only recorded 68 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. However, he got an increase in opportunities in the passing game. Hasty produced 23 receptions (29 targets) for 157 yards.

The 49ers re-signed Hasty in Mar. 2022, but parted ways with him at the end of preseason. He ultimately signed with the Jaguars on their active roster for the 2022 season and part of the ‘23 campaign.

The veteran running back isn’t an RB2 at this point in his career. However, for a team looking for RB depth at the RB3 spot, who can also provide some special teams, Hasty could be a solid option.

Houston might not be the best fit given the abundance of running backs they have. But seeing Hasty get a workout will hopefully start creating some buzz for the veteran.
