The San Francisco 49ers and the other 31 teams in the NFL are on summer break before the storm starts in July for training camp.
Back in March, quarterback Brock Purdy inked a monster five-year, $265 million extension to keep him locked in for the long haul. While that was a significant weight lifted off the organization's shoulders, a former QB is on thin ice with his new squad.
Trey Lance signed a one-year deal worth up to $6.2 million with the Los Angeles Chargers in April. Despite being the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Lance's tenure in San Francisco never got off the ground.
The same could be said of his time with the Dallas Cowboys, and he isn't off to a good start with the Chargers.
Former 49ers QB Trey Lance is on Thin Ice
According to ESPN's Kris Rhim, on Day 3 of mandatory minicamp earlier this month, Lance was seen forcing a pass into double coverage and was picked off by Derwin James. He was targeting WR Willie Snead, but he was clearly covered.
Meanwhile, during OTAs, Lance severely underthrew RB Omarion Hampton on a deep route, where he had to slow down to reel in the pass.
Lance's spot on the team is far from guaranteed. They have Justin Herbert as their franchise quarterback and a veteran Taylor Heinicke as the QB2. Considering Heinicke has 29 starts under his belt and spent the 2024 season with the Chargers, he's not going anywhere.
Lance is battling DJ Uiagalelei to stick on the team, but his performance this spring didn't put him in a positive light. The North Dakota State product only has 12 games (5 starts) in his NFL career. In those outings, he's gone 81-of-143 (56.6%) for 1,063 passing yards, five passing touchdowns, and four interceptions. He added 276 yards on the ground.
Lance always had the physical traits teams look for in the NFL, but he has failed to put things together. This opportunity with the Chargers may be his last in the league, and with what he's shown thus far, he's on thin ice going into training camp.
