At this point in the NFL offseason, most teams have wrapped up their organized team activities (OTAs) and mandatory minicamp as they prepare for training camp next month.
The San Francisco 49ers were one of the teams that had their minicamp this week, giving head coach Kyle Shanahan and the rest of his coaching staff one more chance to work with various players on the 90-man roster.
Speaking of the 90-man roster, many teams are using the post-minicamp period as an opportunity to make changes. Before training camp begins, NFL teams will cut players at the bottom of the roster, allowing them to bring in new faces that could compete for a spot on the 53-man or practice squad.
One former 49ers defensive back is now on the search for his next team after getting released on Thursday by his latest squad.
Former 49ers CB Tre Swilling Waived by Jets
The New York Jets announced that they waived ex-49ers cornerback Tre Swilling on Thursday. Swilling spent last season on the Jets’ practice squad and appeared in one game.
The ex-49ers cornerback was signed to a futures deal at the end of last season, but it wasn’t enough to keep him on the 90-man roster ahead of training camp. The 26-year-old Swilling hasn’t played much in his short NFL career.
Before this season, the last time he played in an NFL regular season game was with the 49ers in 2023.
The former Georgia Tech cornerback joined San Francisco as a member of their practice squad in December 2022 after previously being with the New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans.
Swilling only spent a week on the 49ers’ practice squad before San Francisco parted ways with him. However, San Francisco signed Swilling to a futures deal in February 2023. He stayed with the 49ers for training camp and preseason that summer but was cut ahead of the start of the 2023 season.
The young cornerback was immediately signed to the taxi squad but was cut again, this time in late September. From there, Swilling joined the Baltimore Ravens and then the Jets.
Given his practice-squad experience, the former 49ers cornerback should be able to find another opportunity to compete for a 53-man roster spot.
