5. Jake Moody, K
Jake Moody will be around longer than anyone else on this list. With two years left on his contract, there's no reason to move on from him in the spring, and I fully expect him to be present for 49ers training camp. But that's where his time in San Francisco will likely end.
After a great rookie season in 2023, Moody really collapsed after his brief three-game injury absence in 2024. In nine games after the injury he was just 11-of-20 on field goals. That included going 2-of-6 from 50-plus yards and 3-of-8 from 40 to 49 yards.
The tough thing about coming back from something like that as a kicker is how different live in-game kicking is than kicking in practice. You often wonder "why would a team play someone who misses this many kicks?" and often the answer is that they don't miss those kicks in practice.
So even if Moody bounces back with a great offseason, it's hard to trust that he'd be the right guy with the game on the line in Week 1.
San Fran should not enter training camp without some competition for Moody, and ultimately there's a decent chance he would lose that battle. But that's not the only thing that would send him out the door in the late summer.
Teams get desperate for kickers as the season approaches — whether because of training camp injuries or surprise struggles. That causes a brief heating up of the trade market at the position. With Moody's track record from his rookie year, the 49ers would have a decent shot at recouping a late-round draft pick from a needy team. That would be too good to pass up.
