The San Francisco 49ers have overhauled their roster in the opening weeks of free agency. While the trade of Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders and the departure of Aaron Banks have taken most of the headlines, there are several other players that are leaving in preparation for a big contract extension for Brock Purdy.
Some of those moves haven’t been as buzzworthy but still contain some drama. A former 49ers defender who was waived late last season found a new home during free agency. But he showed that there was some bad blood with his former team in a few posts on social media.
Former 49ers Cornerback Ambry Thomas Shows Bad Blood Toward Former Team
Ambry Thomas was one player to change addresses this week when he signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings. Thomas served in a reserve role for the 49ers last season but took to his X account to show his true feelings about the move.
“Legend says I wasn’t the only one asking to get up outta there,” Thomas said with a crying emoji and a laughing emoji.
Thomas tried to blow off the initial post asking “Why this gotta be football related” and clapped back at a fan when they suggested he wasn’t wanted there because he was soft.
“My bad bro. Who are you?” Thomas wrote. “Nvr seen you in nor around that building Coach Yac. Because my messages don’t say nun about who you are & only people in that building asking me to stay. I love 49ers not sure they luv u bro.”
Regardless if there’s bad blood or not, it appeared Thomas’s time in San Francisco came to an end at the right time. The 25-year-old had a strong rookie season with 23 total tackles, five pass defenses and an interception in his rookie season but lost his starting job in favor of Demmodore Lenoir midway through the 2022 season.
Thomas played in 15 games with 43 total tackles, seven pass defenses, an interception and a fumble recovery in 2023 but fractured his forearm during last season’s preseason opener before being waived last December.
Now looking for a fresh start in Minnesota, Thomas will hope he’s found a better situation with the Vikings.
