The legal tampering period has officially opened up and teams didn't waste a second signing players. In fact, the San Francisco 49ers lost OT Jaylon Moore to the Kansas City Chiefs, according to the Athletic's Dianna Russini.
They reportedly gave him a two-year, $30 million deal. That deal was announced shortly after the tampering window opened up, which adds to the suspicion that the sides were talking before the window officially opened up.
Regardless of that, this seems like a massive overpay by the Chiefs. Moore was a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and provided them with a backup tackle. During the 2023 season, he played in 23% of the snaps and played in 29% of the snaps in 2024.
He was yet to see an expanded role, but the Chiefs clearly like what he brings to the table. Last season, the Chiefs dealt with a bunch of problems at tackle. Kingsley Suamataia was a massive letdown as a rookie, and D.J. Humphries struggled to come in midseason and play good ball.
The Chiefs are rolling the dice on a 27-year-old player who they believe has his best football in front of him. Over the last two seasons, Moore logged 279 pass-blocking sets and allowed just two sacks.
Before landing Moore, Kansas City was interested in signing OT Ronnie Stanley, but he re-signed with the Baltimore Ravens before hitting the market.
We'll have to wait and see if Moore lives up to that deal, but that's the danger of shopping in free agency. Teams will have to overpay in order to lock down certain players, and that seems like the case here with Moore.
The 49ers are secure at left tackle, with Trent Williams slated to come back and lock down the left side of the offensive line. They have others needs on the roster, but tackle wasn't one of them.
