Brock Purdy not too long ago was Mr. Irrelevant, but now is Mr. $182 million guaranteed after breaking out with the San Francisco 49ers. Being the last pick living in San Francisco, Purdy originally had to be super cost-efficient with his purchases and living conditions.
Now that he no longer has to worry about saving money, he has the freedom to make his first big purchase. A player's first big spend after a new contract tells a lot about their personality, so Purdy's first proposed purchase is certainly telling.
49ers' Brock Purdy Has First Big Purchase in Mind if His Wife Approves
Matt Barrows, who covers the 49ers for The Athletic, shared that Purdy wants to purchase a bass boat, pending approval from his wife, Jenna.
It isn't the flashiest first purchase, but that fits who Purdy is as a player. He worked hard to become the 49ers starter, who also traded up to select Trey Lance in the first round at number three overall in the same draft as Purdy.
Based on researching bass boats, they can range in price from $10,000 to over $100,000, so it will be interesting to see how frugal Purdy is with the specific boat he buys.
Purdy's overall journey to get to this point has been a fascinating one. Purdy has always been overshadowed and doubted, but the 49ers were one of the few if teams that believed in his abilities.
He may never become one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, but the team made the Super Bowl with him, and is certainly capable of winning one with him in the future.
Now that he is no longer overlooked, given his new contract, it will be interesting to see how much his play changes, if at all. The money could always go to his head and he doesn't get much better, but more likely, given his background, he will work even harder to live up to the contract.
The 49ers lost a lot of pieces this offseason, especially on the defensive side of the ball, so more onus may fall on the shoulders of Purdy this coming season to lead the team to the playoffs. It will be fun to watch Purdy take on more responsibility and see if he rises to the occasion or crumbles under the added pressure of being $182 million richer.
