The San Francisco 49ers are fully in offseason mode following a disappointing 2024 campaign that saw the organization miss the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2020.
Needless to say, general manager John Lynch has a busy next few months ahead of him. Not only must the 49ers GM address multiple roster needs through the NFL draft and free agency, but he also needs to iron out a contract extension with franchise quarterback Brock Purdy.
Although a new contract might not be imminent, one 49ers insider has just shed some major light on how potential extension discussions could unfold.
49ers, Purdy Expect Drama-Free Contract Negotiations
On Thursday, The San Francisco Standard's Tim Kawakami revealed that 49ers fans shouldn't expect much drama leading up to Purdy's next contract.
"There are indications that Purdy and the 49ers both are feeling there won't be fireworks leading up to a long-term deal," Kawakami wrote. "I'm hearing the framework might be a little different than recent big QB agreements, which could take some time to hash out."

On one hand, it's great knowing that the two sides don't plan to drag out extension talks. NFL fans have seen what unnecessary drama can do to a player-team relationship, and the last thing the 49ers need is headaches this offseason.
It also isn't surprising given that Purdy told Kawakami at the beginning of January that he wants to avoid any drama.
" I'd like to get (an extension) done sooner rather than later, just so I can come back to work and get going with all the guys here."
- Brock Purdy
On the other hand, it'll be interesting to see what Kawakami means when he says that "the framework might be a little different."
Nicknamed "Mr. Irrelevant," Purdy joined the 49ers as the final pick in the 2022 NFL draft before being quickly thrust into the spotlight. He's since gone on to be one of the league's top starting signal-callers, racking up 9,518 passing yards, 64 touchdowns (to 27 interceptions), and a 104.9 passer rating while leading San Francisco to a 23-13 record across 39 career starts.
Following that three-season performance, ESPN's Dan Graziano is predicting that Purdy's extension could be in the neighborhood of $196 million ($112 million guaranteed) spread across four years. The $49 million in annual average earnings he'd make would put him just below the likes of Lamar Jackson ($52 million) and Jalen Hurts ($51 million) but above Kyler Murray ($46.1 million).
Hopefully, Purdy and the 49ers put pen to paper sooner rather than later so that both sides can focus on the remainder of the offseason. The 25-year-old QB is a major reason why San Francisco has experienced two NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl appearance since the start of the 2022 season.
