The San Francisco 49ers are one of the best teams in the NFL at developing talent, which is something of a blessing and a curse.
The good is obvious: getting high-end production out of low draft picks and cheap free agents lets you spend big on your stars while maintaining a deep, competitive roster.
The bad is especially tangible at this time of the year: other teams love poaching your free agents. There are 17 former 49ers who hit free agency in March and who have already been signed by new teams. That leaves only seven unemployed.
Remaining 49ers Free Agents in April
The list of 49ers from the 2024 roster who became free agents in March but still haven't signed anywhere at the beginning of April sits at seven players:
- De'Vondre Campbell
- Jon Feliciano
- Khalil Davis
- Chris Conley
- Taybor Pepper
- Pat O'Donnell
- Tashaun Gipson
The list is definitely a bit of a mixed bag. Campbell's egregious behavior (throwing a fit and quitting on the team, leading to a suspension) is going to make it a tough sell for any NFL coaching staff to want him around, despite his talent.
There are some players on the list who were total non-factors, barely seeing the field. It's hard for other teams to get excited about guys like that, since they had so few opportunities to see them.
Then there's a guy like Conley, who played a pretty significant share of both the offensive (22.2%) and special teams (48.2%) snaps.
With maybe the exception of Campbell, you should still expect all of these guys to end up on training camp rosters somewhere though. It may take a while, as teams would rather roll the dice on some high-upside rookies, but after the remaining gaps in their rosters become clear, this lower tier of free agents tend to start signing deals.
