Once upon a time, the man formerly known as Robby Anderson (now Robby Chosen) was a solid wide receiver for the New York Jets and the Carolina Panthers. Then he bashed his new teammate, Baker Mayfield, in now-infamous social media posts, and since then, that's what he's been known best for.
That and his name change. He was a good hand in New York and Carolina. He had six straight seasons of 500 yards or more per season, until 2022. From that year on, he's never broken 300 yards in a single season, and he's started to bounce around from team to team to team. His name change didn't help, and most people forgot he was still in the NFL up until this past weekend, when he had five receptions and 92 yards against the Las Vegas Raiders.
It was a solid outing, and while his career went down the drain after trying to drag now two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Mayfield (all to defend Teddy Bridgewater), it looks like the man now known as Chosen may, in fact, have a second shot in the spotlight. The San Francisco 49ers are weak at wide receiver, and someone like Chosen could be a fifth or fourth receiver for the Niners.
If he's able to make the team, something that seems very likely after the performance this past week, he may just find himself putting up some big numbers this season. He's not taking the starting spots from Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall but he could probably be a good fourth receiver for the team and why not? At 6'3, he'd be able to be a great red zone threat due to his size alone.
If he does make the team, he'll also reunite with former teammate Christian McCaffrey, whom he played in Carolina and briefly again in 2024 when Chosen had a cold cup of coffee with the club. Ironic, as the same player he tried to go to bat for back in 2022, Bridgewater, is now trying to win the backup spot behind Mayfield with Tampa Bay.
If this were a 1990s pop song, one could say it's rather ironic that everything has played out as it has. Don't you think?
