The San Francisco 49ers are one of the most well-run NFL franchises — especially from a coaching perspective.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has provided the 49ers with stability throughout his tenure, coaching the team to a 70-62 record with two Super Bowl appearances in eight seasons. That level of success doesn't come for free, though, which is why Shanahan's assistants are constantly being picked off for other NFL opportunities.
One name who's been rumored to leave the Bay Area this offseason is 49ers assistant head coach Brandon Staley. While 49ers fans have been holding out how for a 2025 return, it looks like Staley is one step closer to leaving the franchise following the latest update.
49ers Rumors: Brandon Staley to Interview with Saints
NFL insider Albert Breer is reporting that Staley is one of the names scheduled to interview for the New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator vacancy on Sunday. Philadelphia Eagles pass game coordinator/defensive backs coach Christian Parker will also be interviewed by the Saints at some point in the day.
The Saints are interviewing 49ers assistant HC Brandon Staley and Eagles DBs coach Christian Parker for their defensive coordinator job today, per source. They met with Vikings DBs coach Daronte Jones yesterday.

This, obviously, will be a big hire for Kellen Moore's 1st staff.
Staley has been with the 49ers since the start of the 2024 season. The 42-year-old Perry, OH native was previously the Los Angeles Chargers head coach for three seasons, which includes when newly-hired Saints HC Kellen Moore served as the former's offensive coordinator.
In other words, it isn't exactly surprising that Moore wants to reunite with Staley in New Orleans.
The Saints desperately need a DC like Staley after finishing last season with the third-worst defensive grade on Pro Football Focus. Although things in San Francisco were far from perfect in 2024, the 49ers finished the year with the 16th-best mark on defense, illustrating the type of impact the former Chargers head coach could have in "The Big Easy."
Successfully turning the Saints' defense around would also bring Staley one step closer to landing another head coaching gig one day.
If he does make his way to New Orleans, San Francisco fans won't have to wait long to see what Staley can do alongside Moore. The Saints are already confirmed to be one of the 49ers' road opponents next season, however, an official date has yet to be confirmed.
With or without Staley, the future is bright in the Bay. The 49ers are heading into the rest of the NFL offseason with the sixth-best Super Bowl 60 odds (+1300) on FanDuel Sportsbook.
