The San Francisco 49ers spent a good amount of money this offseason locking up key pieces on both sides of the ball to long-term contracts. With Brock Purdy, Fred Warner, and George Kittle all signing extensions this summer, there just isn't much money left for John Lynch and the front office to give out.
From a financial perspective, the Niners are completely right in wanting to hold off on committing any more money to long-term deals before the season starts. From a football perspective, they could be setting themselves up for a standoff with their top remaining weapon on the outside in Jauan Jennings. Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard reports that the two sides are nowhere near an agreement on a new deal.

49ers WR Jauan Jennings Nowhere Near New Deal With San Francisco
After finishing the 2024 season in the basement of the NFC West, San Francisco has plans to return to the top of the division and be a factor in the playoff race. With reports indicating that 49ers star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is not expected back until sometime around Week 6 of the regular season, having a player the caliber of Jennings on the outside would make life a bit easier on Purdy until Aiyuk is back in the fold.
Jennings has maintained that he wants to be traded if he isn't compensated with a new, long-term contract before the 2025 season kicks off. As Kawakami noted, that is not likely to happen anytime soon. This could ultimately come down to a matter of which side blinks first. Given that Jennings is under contract for this season and would only cost himself money down the line by choosing not to play despite being healthy, San Francisco's front office would seem to be in the position of power here.
There is no doubt that the former seventh-round pick out of the University of Tennessee is an important piece of the puzzle on offense for the Niners. His 77 receptions for 975 yards and six touchdowns this past season prove that.
Just because Jennings believes he has earned a new deal, though, doesn't mean the franchise has the money to give him the contract he desires. After handing out over $400 million in contract extensions to Purdy, Warner, and Kittle alone, the money just doesn't seem to be there for Jennings as well.
Fans in the Bay Area may have to wait a couple more weeks to see which side blinks first in this standoff.
