The NFL is always looking for ways to keep the game more engaging. With that being at the forefront of the minds at league offices, they announced on Wednesday that there will be a new award given out.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the NFL is going to hand out an award called Protector the year. It will be gifted to the league's best offensive linemen. NFL VP Troy Vincent stated it's to "recognize the big fellas."

With another award up for grabs, San Francisco LT Trent Williams is someone who will be a top candidate that will be considered.

Trent Williams Will Be Someone To Watch for Protector of the Year Award

Williams will be 37 years old when the 2025 season kicks off. Despite being older at the position, he's still one of the best players at LT. In 10 games last season, Williams had an 85.6 overall grade (6th among 140 graded tackles), an 84.5 pass-blocking grade (9th among 140 graded tackles), and an 81.4 run-blocking grade (8th among 140 graded tackles).

Over 381 pass blocking snaps, Williams only allowed three pressures and one sack. Although he missed seven games due to an ankle injury, he is looking to have a bounce-back campaign.

Since landing in San Francisco in 2020, he has made the Pro Bowl four times (2020-2023). He's also a three-time First Team All-Pro selection (2021-2023).

Williams is able to maul defenders in the run game while being nimble and powerful as a pass protector. With Brock Purdy in SF for the long haul after landing a five-year, $265 million extension, the Oklahoma product is going to need to be on his A-game to keep the 49ers' franchise QB upright.

Just last September, Williams got a three-year, $82.66 million extension. He's getting paid handsomely, and after a disappointing 2024 season for the 49ers, everyone will be motivated to redeem themselves.

Look for Williams to come out hungry in 2025 and be a finalist for the Protector of the Year award.
