The San Francisco 49ers and the other 31 teams in the NFL are about to open up training camp over the next few weeks. The 49ers will begin camp on July 15, with rookies reporting, followed by the veterans on July 22.

This year’s training camp should be intriguing to watch on many different levels as the 49ers are coming off a disappointing 2024 season and went through a lot of roster and personnel changes that they hope will help them in 2025.

In terms of the roster, the 49ers saw multiple defensive players depart the organization in free agency, including standout cornerback Charvarius Ward, who signed a massive four-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Niners are hoping that Renardo Green and Deommodre Lenoir can fill that void left by the veteran cornerback. However, if either of those two guys were to get hurt, San Francisco could be in a world of trouble.

Free Agent CB Kendall Fuller Should Be on 49ers’ Radar Ahead of Training Camp

Therefore, the 49ers should consider bringing in veteran free agent cornerback Kendall Fuller to camp to see if he could be a potential fit.

The Miami Dolphins released the 30-year-old defensive back in February after spending the 2024 season in the Sunshine State. Fuller appeared and started in 11 games, despite missing some time with multiple concussions and a knee injury.

The veteran cornerback didn’t record a single interception last season, but posted seven pass deflections and a fumble recovery.

Fuller wasn’t overly spectacular in pass coverage with the Dolphins. He had a 68.1 completion percentage allowed on targets, a 97.7 pass rating allowed when targeted, but only gave up one receiving touchdown.

The veteran defensive back’s PFF grades backed up this point, as his pass coverage grade was 62.4 (94th among 222 eligible cornerbacks). But Fuller wasn’t afraid to help out in stopping the run with a 75.1 grade (36th).

Fuller also has the experience to play on the boundary and in the slot, which is what the 49ers could use in case of injury or poor performance. If you look at San Francisco’s CB room as a whole, there are a lot of questions to be answered as to who will be starting in Week 1.

While Green could be the guy opposite of Lenoir, he reportedly had his struggles in OTAs, which isn’t what you want to read going into training camp. Therefore, the Niners should be doing their due diligence and bringing in a veteran like Fuller, who has a ton of experience and won a Super Bowl in 2019 with the Kansas City Chiefs.
