The San Francisco 49ers have made two selections in the 2025 NFL Draft thus far and have focused on the defensive side of the ball. In the first round, the 49ers took Georgia EDGE Mykel Williams with the 11th overall pick.

They continued to focus on that side of the ball when they get on the clock on Day 2. With the 43rd overall pick, San Francisco took Texas DT Alfred Collins. San Francisco has focused on improving their defensive line.

With another force added to that unit, that doesn't bode well for defensive tackle Kevin
Givens. He joined the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and stuck around for six seasons. This offseason, Givens re-upped with San Francisco on a one-year, $2.05 million deal.

While the 49ers brought him back for another season, Collins could quickly take his spot on the depth chart. Over six seasons in San Francisco, Givens has tallied 90 total tackles, eight sacks, and two fumble recoveries.

Just last season, he had 11 total tackles, two TFLs, and 3.5 sacks. According to PFF, Givens finished with a 49.9 overall grade (149th among 219 eligible defenders), 68.2 pass-rush grade (39th among 219 eligible defenders), and a 38.4 run-defense grade (190th among 219 eligible defenders). In 2024, he played in 185 total snaps, but with the addition of Collins, he could quickly take his snaps in the rotation.

Collins is a disruptive run defender who has good instincts to quickly shed blocks and get into the backfield. In 64 collegiate career games, he has posted 141 total tackles, 18 TFLs, seven sacks, and 12 pass deflections.

He has the skills to be a productive force in Year 1 and quickly make an impact. The 49ers have made an emphasis to bolster the defensive front and that could be bad news for Givens.
